Privacy in stories

When I tell stories including names, projects, or specific situations, I avoid using actual specific details, specifically:

  • Name and Demographics: that’s random. I may fail or not to bring in enough level of diversity, but using randomness is the way I have to avoid any unintentional bias -from the writer or the reader- regarding demographics (gender, race, etc), at the same time that protect the privacy of the actual individuals

  • Companies and projects: Anecdotes are not from my current company, it can be from a friend of a friend, made up to illustrate the case, or it can be an actual situation for which i change project names, departments involved, or the nature of the project. This is not to be mysterious, but to assure im protecting information that is not for me to share regarding other people or companies.
